How Do I Set the Valves on My Tractor?

We want to help you set the valves on your tractor.

If you do not feel that you understand these steps, or can perform them safely, consult your tractor dealer or local mechanic.

Time to get started.

Remove your valve cover.

Use a socket or special tool to turn over the engine. Watch the valves move as you turn the engine. The valves slowly go up and then stop. Then start slowly going down.

Check the gap between the valve stem and the rocker arm when the valve is in the middle of the “stopped” position at the top. This is when the valve is closed, and the push rod is loose.

Pick a valve. We recommend starting at the back.

Loosen the locknut. Adjust the bolt until you can feel a drag on the feeler gauge when you slide it in or out. If it is too hard to pull it out, you are just compressing the valve spring. You need to loosen the bolt a little. If you do not feel any drag, then tighten it a little. You want a little drag on the feeler gauge.

All Yanmar valves are set at 0.006" to 0.008" intake and exhaust. Use a feeler gauge for that size.

Tighten the locknut and re-check.

Move to the next valve.

Repeat until all the valves are set.
