There are specific driving techniques to use when transporting a compact tractor.
Maintain a slow and consistent speed. Tractors are not designed for high speeds, so drive cautiously, especially around curves and on hills.
Slow down significantly before turning. Tractors have a higher center of gravity than cars, making them more prone to tipping or losing control during abrupt maneuvers.
Turn the steering wheel slowly, smoothly, and gradually. Avoid sudden direction changes to maintain control of the tractor.
When using a clutch transmission, release the clutch slowly and smoothly when starting to drive. This helps prevent stalling the engine.
For tractors with separate brake pedals for each rear wheel, ensure both pedals are locked together during road transport. Avoid operating the differential lock when on paved roads to help maintain stability. When carrying 3-point-mounted implements, lock the 3-point hitch in the up position and do not operate the control lever while in transit.
If towing a trailer or attachment, use safety chains and a proper drawbar hitch pin with a lynchpin, clip, or lock to prevent it from falling out. Be extra cautious when going up or down hills, as tractors can be prone to tipping in these situations.
Always wear your seatbelt and ensure the tractor is equipped with a Roll-Over Protective Structure (ROPS) for safety.
By following these techniques, you can help ensure a safer transport of your compact tractor on public roads.
