How to Effectively Clean a Horse Stall

Team Tractor Ranch

Let's discuss the most effective way to clean a horse stall.

First, to make this process efficient, gather the following tools...

  • Plastic muck fork

  • Wheelbarrow or muck bucket

  • Broom

  • Flat-bottom shovel

  • Stiff-bristled scrub brush

  • Fresh shavings or bedding material

  • Watering can (to dampen dusty areas)

  • Bandana (to cover your nose and mouth if dusty)

By following these steps regularly, you can ensure that your horse's living space remains clean and healthy, contributing to their overall well-being.

Cleaning a horse stall is essential for maintaining a healthy environment for your horse.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to effectively clean out your horse stall:

  • Always start by removing your horse from the stall for safety. Secure them in a safe area, such as a pasture or another empty stall.

  • Remove any uneaten hay from the stall. If the hay is still good, set it aside; if not, dispose of it in your muck bucket.

  • Use a manure fork to pick out all visible manure and any urine-soaked bedding. Be thorough to ensure the stall is clean.

  • Turn over the remaining clean bedding to aerate it and help it dry out. This also allows you to spot any hidden manure or wet spots.

  • For a more thorough cleaning, consider removing all bedding from the stall, including clean bedding. This allows you to inspect the floor for any issues.

  • If you find any wet spots on the floor, scrape away the wet bedding and treat the area with an odor-absorbing agent like Sweet PDZ or Stall Dry. Allow it to dry before re-bedding.

  • Spread the remaining clean bedding evenly across the stall floor, ensuring that wet areas are covered first.

  • After spreading out the existing bedding, add fresh bedding as needed to maintain a comfortable environment for your horse.

  • Remove water buckets from the stall, dump them outside or into a drain, scrub them with soap and water, rinse thoroughly, and refill before returning them to the stall.
