Power Steering System Cost Comparison

Hydraulic Power Steering

Hydraulic systems tend to be more expensive upfront due to more complex components (pump, hoses, fluid reservoir, etc).

They require integration with the tractor's existing hydraulic system.

May need a separate pump if the tractor's hydraulics are insufficient.

However, hydraulic systems have been the standard for decades, so parts are widely available.

Electric Power Steering

Electric systems are often less expensive because of fewer components (primarily an electric motor and control unit).

No hydraulic fluid or associated parts are needed.

Can be more easily retrofitted to older tractors.

The simplicity of electric systems generally makes them cheaper to install and maintain over time.

Cost Considerations

Aftermarket hydraulic kits for tractors can range from around $600 to over $1000 depending on the tractor model and kit quality.

DIY electric power steering conversions using car parts can be done for as little as $200-300 in parts.

Purpose-built electric power steering kits for tractors are less common but may fall in a similar price range to hydraulic kits.

Long-term Costs

While electric systems may have a lower upfront cost, consider:

  • Hydraulic systems have proven longevity in agricultural applications.

  • Electric systems may require less maintenance (no fluid changes).

  • Repair costs could potentially be higher for electric systems if specialized parts are needed.

Ultimately, the cost difference will depend on the specific tractor model, the quality of the system chosen, and whether it's a DIY installation or a professional retrofit. For many compact tractors, an electric system may offer a more cost-effective solution, especially for older models being upgraded.
