What is a Tractor DPF and Why Is It So Important?

We want to help you learn everything you need to know about your tractor’s Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF).

And as a quick aside --- we are here to help you purchase a new tractor and implements when the time is right.

Let’s get to the details.

Emissions Standards Exceeded

Tractors now run cleaner than ever.

Emissions standards are increasing thanks to the EPA.

Yanmar tractors can meet and exceed the increasing EPA standards thanks to the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF).

What is the DPF and Why Is It Important?

Since 2007, the DPF has been used by many diesel-fueled trucks. The DPF catches and traps soot (unburned fuel) to be burned out at a later time (for example… while the tractor is carrying a heavy load, or it is undergoing a regeneration cycle). The soot is burned out any time the exhaust temperature is increased.

Regeneration Process

The regeneration process temporarily changes the operating settings of the engine to generate extra-high temperatures in the DPF to combust and consume the engine exhaust products (pollutants) that accumulate in the DPF during normal engine operation.

Yanmar machines provide the perk of allowing the operator to maintain complete control over the tractor and to be able to continue working normally with no power loss or engine speed limitations during a normal regeneration process.

EPA Mandates

The EPA mandates that the DPF technology lasts 3,000 hours.

The Yanmar DPF lasts exponentially longer --- contributing to a clean, long, and happy life for your tractor.

Cleaning the DPF

After about 3,000 hours, the DPF will need to be cleaned. You remove it from the tractor and send it to the Yanmar Reman program. The DPF will be cleaned by “baking” it in an oven to remove the excessive ash load (the remains after the soot has been burned out during the regeneration).

A Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) is what indicates that the ash build-up in the DPF is too high.

The Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) is a very smart piece of technology and a clean contribution to your Yanmar tractor.

Thanks to the DPF, your tractor will be kept cleaner and run better.

Hopefully, this brief article has helped you understand the importance of the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF).
