When to Replace Your Tractor Tires

Tractor tires are a significant investment for farmers, and knowing when to replace them is important to maintain efficiency and safety.

Here are some signs to look for when determining if it's time to replace your tractor tires:

  • Cuts, tears, or punctures that expose the body plies or belts: If a cut, tear, or puncture exposes the body plies or belts, which provide the tire with strength and stability, it's time for a new tire.

  • Dry rot or weathering: Weathering is a natural wear progression for any tire. If you notice that your tires have become brittle, faded, or cracked, dry rot has set in, and it's time to change your tires.

  • Tire damage: Check for tire damage, such as bulges, blisters, or other deformities, which can indicate that the tire is no longer safe to use.

  • Tread depth: A general rule of thumb is that when a tire gets below about 20% of its original tread depth, it may be time to start shopping for new tires.

It's important to note that tractor tires are different from automobile tires and require their own level of care. Unlike automobile tires that mainly consider tread depth when determining whether or not they need replacing, tractor tires assess quality on a whole other scale.

Regular maintenance routines can help prevent dry rot and other issues that can lead to tire failure.
